Editors' Table: How to Tell Your Story and Navigate The Media

Online workshop for independent makers, designers and artists led by Debika Ray.

Closing date: 1 Oct 2026
Debika Ray is running an online workshop for independent makers, designers and artists:

'Makers, designers and artists often ask me how to communicate their work - questions like: what do editors actually look for? How do you get their attention?
What turns a product or object into a story?

There's no one answer, but I understand why they ask - it's harder than ever to stand out, editors and writers receive thousands of emails each week, the digital realm is overcrowded, and the media landscape is continually shifting. As a freelance journalist who pitches ideas to editors, I ask myself the same questions everyday.

In my experience, exceptional work by makers, designers and artists is often overlooked not because it isn't good, but because it's not positioned or timed in a way that makes sense editorially. With that in mind, I'm developing a workshop for independent creative practitioners in craft and design - initially online but maybe in person in future.

Each session will take the form of some insider tips, a candid conversation between me and a guest editor, writer, curator or cultural leader. This will be followed by a discussion and practical feedback on participants' statements, imagery, pitches and positioning - to help with approaching media and your own platforms and applications.

We'll cover:
. How arts journalism works
. What makes something editorially compelling
. How and when to pitch
. How to articulate your practice clearly
. How to approach interviews, studio visits and chance encounters
. How to present your work on your website, social media, and award, grant and scholarship entries

I'm planning a pilot session over the coming months. If this is something you'd consider joining, I'd value your input via this >>form<<

Fill it in to be the first to hear when it's ready to launch - especially if you'd like to put yourself forward for one of the concessionary rate spots.'
