Summerhall Callout for Annual Summer Commission 2026

This callout offers one artist or designer the opportunity to produce a piece of work to be exhibited permanently in a public space on the Summerhall site.

Summerhall is now accepting applications for the 2026 Summer Commission – the second under the Summerhall Arts banner. This callout offers one visual artist or designer the opportunity to produce a piece of work to be exhibited permanently in the public spaces on the Summerhall site. This year, they’re asking for proposals to transform the decking to the right of the courtyard entrance, a prominent, covered area in our central courtyard.

Summerhall is looking for an innovative 3d artwork to create an immersive seating space to be enjoyed year-round, as well as throughout Fringe, by many visitors. The commission open to interpretation and the organisers are excited to see your vision for the space.   

Important Dates 2026

  • 5th May: Applications open
  • 7th June: Applications close
  • 8th – 12th June: Panel Selection
  •  12th June: Selection Announcement
  • 13th June – 4th July: Research and development
  • 5th – 23rd July: Installation
  • 24th July: Launch Event

What’s Included

  • £2000 Fee
  • £1500 Material Budget
  • Bespoke support tailored to requirements of successful applicant / project including installation

The seating space is approximately 5 x 7 metres. Please note that the bar will be removed prior to the commission. The current furniture is subject to requirement.

Submissions (max. 2000 words or 15 minutes in audio/video format) should be sent to: visualarts@summerhallarts.co.uk with the subject line: Summerhall Arts Public Space Commission 2026.

  • Artist biography
  • Examples of recent work
  • Project proposal
  • Visual sketches or mock-ups

The deadline for submissions is 7th June, with selected artists notified week commencing 12th June.
