I am Mavi Hamalı, a Turkish marbling artist, paper designer, and handmade book maker based in Dumfries, Scotland. My practice brings together the centuries-old tradition of Turkish Ebru with contemporary book arts and functional design, creating unique objects that celebrate craftsmanship, heritage, and the beauty of handmade processes. Every marbled pattern is created directly on water and can never be repeated, making each piece entirely one of a kind.
My artistic journey began at a Fine Arts High School and continued with a degree in Sculpture from Mustafa Kemal University. Working with natural pigments, gum tragacanth, and handmade horsehair brushes, I produce every sheet of marbled paper using traditional techniques before transforming them into handcrafted journals, book covers, bookmarks, and other functional paper objects through bookbinding.
Since moving to Scotland, I have seen my practice as a way of building cultural connections through craft. By delivering workshops and engaging with local creative communities, I aim to introduce the living tradition of Turkish marbling to new audiences while demonstrating the value of slow, sustainable making. My essay published by the Society of Scottish Artists and my participation in local creative events reflect my ongoing commitment to Scotland’s artistic community.
