The aim is to gain control over hand-building techniques in order to replicate the form of Egyptian Canopic Jars, and to model the head of a creature, real or imaginary as the lid of the jar. When completed, the unfired jar may be burnished and its surface prepared for smoke firing, if the maker chooses. Otherwise, final treatments and possible decoration will be discussed in the class.
Week 1 - Introduction and Demo. Using historical sources to inspire hand built work. Coiling and sculpting techniques will be used to start creating the vessel. Sketchbooks will be used to formulate ideas.
Week 2 - Finish making the main body of the vessel and refine the surface.
Week 3 - Create and model the lid of the jar in the shape of an animal's head. After watching a demo, this will be fit to the jar.
Week 4 - Refine the construction of the lidded jar. Burnishing
