Lime wood has several properties that make it ideal for relief carving and it was especially favoured for delicate work by master woodcarvers like Grinling Gibbons.
In preparation for the class you will be given guidance notes including images to help you research and prepare a suitable design on paper from your personal photos or drawings.
You will work on a panel approximately A3 in size and 30mm thick and there will be an opportunity to discuss your design and modify to suit your chosen piece of timber.
Over the course you will:
- Be guided through the process from transferring your design to carving in relief
- Be given advice on safe working practice, which tools are appropriate for different tasks and how to use and maintain them.
Techniques towards finishing your carving will also be demonstrated.
