The Northern Isles, Orkney and Shetland, have long captivated artists, writers, and travellers drawn to the elemental meeting of land, sea, and sky. Cast into the North Atlantic, these islands are defined by shifting light, ancient histories, and a delicate balance between endurance and tranquillity. Each archipelago carries its own rhythm: Orkney’s calm and continuity contrast with Shetland’s raw, volatile energy.
This exhibition brings together artists who respond to these northern landscapes and cultures, including those born there, those who have made them home, and others who have journeyed north to explore them. Across painting, printmaking, furniture, jewellery, ceramics, and sculpture, The Northern Isles reflects the shared heritage, craftsmanship and resilience of these communities.
In honouring both contemporary and historic makers, the exhibition celebrates the dialogue between place and person, past and present, revealing how art continues to interpret and renew our understanding of these extraordinary islands.
