Workshops
Yes, I run 1-1 stool making courses. I wanted to offer a course to make something substantial with no experience necessary as I’d done expensive courses myself where you spend a lot of time and only leave with a cutting board, I always felt that with proper planning so much more could be accomplished. I stated these about two months ago and it’s been going really well. We cover the fundamentals of the design, machine safety, and use of hand tools before getting stuck in. We being by band sawing the octagonal tapered legs, we finish these with a hand plane. We then mark up the seat for drilling of the mortices to receive the legs, the seat chamfer is roughed on the bandsaw and cleaned with a plane. We then get everything together to measure the shoulder distance for the footrest and stretcher. All the pieces are joined with wedged tenons which we flush in once the glue is on, this means the student can take the chair home at the end of the day. It is an intense day but everyone has been so happy with the final piece, and some students have returned for regular lessons.
