Bard: Retail Manager & Shop Host

There are two opportunities to join the Bard team, a new shop/gallery showcasing quality goods made in Scotland.

Founded by husbands James Stevens and Hugo Macdonald, it is opening next to Custom Lane in Leith, Edinburgh in late October 2022. Their mission is to tell stories about Scotland through made objects and the people who make them, exploring contemporary Scottish identity and the value of craft in everyday life.

The team has spent two months travelling around Scotland, from the Borders to the Western Isles up to Orkney and Shetland and back down the east coast. They visited over 60 makers and manufacturers to understand first-hand what is being made in Scotland – asking how, and also why. Bard will open with the

work of more than 30 makers on show. They are looking for two people to join them: an experienced retail manager and also a shop host. As well as a business start-up, this is a project they are passionate about; they want to grow a team who bring to Bard their own knowledge and experience, heart and soul. Shared enthusiasm for what they are building is more important than a checklist of qualifications. “Bold, Kind, Fun” are three adjectives that encapsulate Bard’s working culture and the team we hope to build too. There are some skills that would be ideal, but these are neither exhaustive nor prerequisite:

  • Good retail experience on a shop/gallery floor
  • Strong E-Commerce experience (Shopify please)
  • A love for stock taking and ordering
  • Not fazed by logistics and international shipping
  • A natural when it comes to setting-up and managing systems
  • As good with numbers as with people
  • Preferably Edinburgh-based

Salary: £30-40k pro rata, dependent on experience

  • A knack for dealing with customers, in person and on email
  • More than a passing interest in craft and Scottishness
  • A good storyteller and listener
  • Preferably Edinburgh-based
  • Good at wrapping, packing and posting
  • Keeping abreast of stock updates and sales reporting
  • Flexibility to work during the week and at weekends

Salary: £15/h

Both roles are part-time initially, working alongside James and Hugo to build Bard in its exciting early days. They will do everything they can to accommodate preferred working hours and arrangements. Please contact Hugo & James if you are interested: hugo@hugomac.com ; james@james-stevens.co.uk
