Modern Makers Seminar

A seminar investigating ways of providing openings into a skilled craft making career.

Closing date: 9 Nov 2017

Who will be the skilled craftspeople of the future? How can we show people the joys, and sometimes the disappointments, of designing and making a beautiful object from scratch?

How can we encourage young people to try their hand at making when arts provision in schools is under threat, when colleges are reducing their craft courses, and the computer screen is a dominant pastime?

This seminar will debate these questions with the makers and young people who have taken part in Upland's Modern Heritage Craft and Modern Makers projects. They will be joined by speakers who are investigating other ways of providing openings into a skilled craft making career. The seminar acts an opportunity to broaden the discussion around creative apprenticeship models and routes into craft.

Speakers include Carol Sinclair (Applied Arts Scotland), Robin Wood MBE and Tam McGarvey (GalGael) along with past makers and participants from the Modern Makers and Modern Hertitage Craft Projects.
