Meet Collingwood-Norris

The Craft Scotland Summer Show is officially in full swing! Our unique pop-up shop offers a curated selection of distinctive homewares, handcrafted textiles, design-led jewellery and considered furniture from 33 of Scotland's talented makers. So come along and explore some of the best craft in Scotland together in one central location, away from the hustle and bustle of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

We've had a catch-up with some of our featured makers to give you an insight into their work, processes and inspiration. Next up is Flora Collingwood-Norris of the eponymous Collingwood-Norris! A knitwear company based in the textile heartland of the Scottish Borders, Collingwood-Norris creates luxury, hand-finished pieces to cherish for a lifetime.

Hi Flora, why don't you tell us a little bit about yourself?

I’m a knitwear designer and maker based in Galashiels in the Scottish Borders. My company - Collingwood-Norris - create colourful knitted accessories for men and women inspired by the landscapes of Scotland.

How did you end up doing what you do?

I learnt to knit when I was 6 and fell in love with making things. I studied textiles at Heriot Watt University, specialising in knitwear, and have continued to teach myself new techniques and try out new fabric ideas ever since.

How do you start designing a piece?

When designing I often start with photographs, a bit of sketching, and lots of fabric sampling. For me, I find my ideas flow faster when I’m at the knitting machine - I can quickly test samples, see if I like them, and each fabric leads to another new idea.

What’s your favourite part of your making process?

The designing and knitting is my favourite part of the process. I also love the feeling of finishing something, knowing that I’ve made it from start to finish - it’s very satisfying!

What’s the hardest part of your making process?

Sometimes making lots of one thing can be challenging, as that doesn’t feel as creative as always designing and making something new.

Which celebrity could you imagine wearing your work?

I would love to see Emma Watson in one of my wraps - I imagine she would like to snuggle up in one on her days off and read a good book!

What piece of craft do you aspire to own?

I would love to own one of Laura Spring’s rucksacks - they’re bright, colourful and fun. I love to have beautiful pieces that can be used every day.

Who inspires you – do you have an Instagram account or blog you can recommend?

People who are passionate about creating positive change inspire me, such as Safia Minney (People Tree), Orsola de Castro (Fashion Revolution), and so many others! I also love Heather Shields Instagram, it has great colours, processes and patterns.
